Assessments, Instruments and Tools
Getting a full, cogent picture of an individual and/or team is fundamental to a successful partnership. Information can be subjective or objective, and can be gleaned from conversation, interviews and instruments. Assessments are the instruments through which key quantitative information is gathered. Tools are various practical implements to frame situations. Marianne uses the following assessments and tools in her practice:
Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the best known and most trusted personality tool available today. From developing more productive work teams to building closer families, the MBTI can improve the quality of life for anyone and any organization. After more than 50 years, the MBTI instrument continues to be the most trusted and widely used assessment in the world for understanding individual differences and uncovering new ways to work and interact with others. More than 2 million assessments are administered to individuals annually —including employees of many Fortune 500 companies. Marianne has been certified in the use of MBTI for over five years in her one-on-one coaching practice, and has run numerous workshops that feature MBTI.
Pathfinder (Cash-Lehman) measures 85 behavioral attributes and 35 career interest areas and has been in continuous development for over 20 years. It is one of the most powerful and accurate systems available for helping people realize the performance potential of their individual capital and best career potential.
Emotional Competence Inventory – the Hay Group certified Marianne in the ECI 5 years ago. The ECI is a multirater, 360 instrument based on the work of Dr. Daniel Goleman and Dr. Richard Boyatzis to identify the non-cognitive aspects of personality that influence success.
Managerial Styles, Learning Styles – research shows that by taking the right approach in a given situation, a manager can really improve employee morale and, very importantly, the group’s performance. Learning Styles explores an individual or team’s problem solving techniques, teamwork approaches, problem resolution style and communication in the workplace. Gleaned from the work of Daniel Goleman and David Kolb respectively, these two instruments are cornerstones of the material from The Hay Group. Marianne holds certification in the use of both tools.
Human Motivation – identifying a person’s motive profile is insight helpful to learning about not only their own drivers, but also how to use effective strategies for influencing others. Marianne uses instruments that clarify the strength of both McClelland’s three social motives, achievement, affiliation and power, and those attributes that Eduard Spranger (Theoretical, Utilitarian, Individual (Power), Social/Service, Traditional or Aesthetic) identified
Resilience Quotient – Marianne is one of the relatively few people to be certified in the Karen Reivich, Ph.D. and Andrew Shatte, Ph.D. body of work about resilience. She uses an instrument that measures the seven essential skills for overcoming life’s inevitable obstacles.
Influence Toolkit – Marianne has studied with Bruce Patton of the Harvard Negotiation Project toward an intelligent use of their toolkit. Frameworks such as the Ladder of Inference and the three levels of difficult conversations are incorporated into her approach.
